Sciatica is known as Gridhrasi in Ayurveda. In this kind of disease patients feel nervous pain in the buttocks, back of thigh and leg served by sciatic nerve. Inflammation in the region where the sciatic nerve passes through the curve of the hip-bone is responsible for this disease.
As per Ayurveda sciatic condition is a result of aggravation of Vayu and excess physical strain. It is seen that constipation aggravates an attack of this disease.
Ayurvedic Treatment: Eranda is the preferred herb to treat sciatic fever and pain. This is given to the patients in the form of linctus which is called Eranda Paka in Ayurveda. Two teaspoonfuls of this is given to the patient with a cup of warm water or milk. It basically helps as a natural laxative and helps those patients who are suffering from constipation. Guggulu is another herb of choice to treat all kind of pains initiated from the nervous system. Ayurvedic medicine Yogaraja Guggulu is given to the patient in the dose of two tablets four times a day along with water or milk. Ayurvedic preparation Saindhavadi Taila can be applied externally to get quick relief.Hot fomentation by a packet of salt tied up in the form of a round bolus in a piece of linen is very useful.
Diet: Food item which aggravates constipation should be strictly prohibited. All kind of fried items should be avoided. Try to avoid sour food like curd. Saffron helps in treating sciatica pain. Saffron can be mixed with warm milk and given to the patient.
Do a regular gentle exercise of the leg. Don’t do strenuous exercise like running and jumping. Take a bath in hot water. try to avoid cold weather. Swimming is an extremely beneficial exercise in treating Sciatica.
